Weekend Disruption For Drivers & Rail Passengers

Drivers and rail passengers face disruption in Market Harborough this weekend.

A stretch of Rockingham Road will be closed from 8am tomorrow until 8pm on Sunday and there will be no train services running on both days.

The road will be shut between Great Bowden Road and the railway bridge, outside the railway station, so National Grid can undertake new electricity supply works.

HFM asked National Grid why no advanced warning signs had been placed on the road to warn drivers and a spokesperson said: “We regret that advance warning signs weren’t displayed as expected, and apologise for any inconvenience caused by the road closure.”

The official diversion route will take drivers heading in and out of town via the A6 Market Harborough bypass.

It is the first of six consecutive weekends there will be no rail services serving the town, because of engineering works.

Replacement buses will operate from the station to take people to Kettering and Leicester, where they can join East Midlands Railway services.

Gavin Crook, principal programme sponsor for Network Rail, said: “We know the disruption caused by these important upgrades will frustrate some passengers but the long-term benefits will be significant.

“Improvements will make the line more resilient, improving train performance, while lowering the track, where possible, will minimise disruption and costs.

“We’re sorry that journeys will take longer than usual while the work is taking place, but these improvements will contribute to a more efficient railway with greener, smoother journeys in the future.”
