A warning has been issued after people were seen being lowered over a railway bridge near Market Harborough to hang flags.

Police and Network Rail were alerted after a train driver spotted them on the structure in East Langton yesterday evening.

East Midlands Railway services were delayed as a result, as a speed restriction was imposed for safety reasons and the flags are to be removed.

British Transport Police received the report just after after 6pm and a spokesperson told HFM: “Our officers attended the scene and confirmed flags had been put up, but there was no trace of anyone at the location.”

A spokesperson for Network Rail told HFM: “It was reported by a train driver that some people were hanging flags from a bridge on the Midland Main Line yesterday evening.

“Trains in the area were cautioned for a short time as a result. The location was identified as East Langton and the flags are being removed safely.”

“People are reminded that trespassing on the railway and placing objects on or near the railway infrastructure not only endangers lives but can also cause significant disruption to train services.

“Safety is our top priority, and we urge everyone to stay clear of th railway for their own safety and that of others.”

St George and Union flags have been hung from lampposts and other public places in locations across the country in recent weeks.

The movement gathered pace on social media, with the name ‘Operation Raise the Colours’, with those behind it saying they were motivated by pride and patriotism.

Others have expressed concern, with claims the action is provocative amid concerns over immigration.

Several local authorities have removed flags from street infrastructure, citing road safety fears.
