Vigil To Take Place In Market Harborough In Memory Of Dogs Shot Dead

A vigil is to take place in Market Harborough on Sunday to pay tribute to two dogs shot dead by Police in London last month.
The event in Welland Park at 1pm will be one of a number taking place across the country following the deaths of Staffordshire bull terriers Marshall and Millions.
The incident sparked outcry among some animal lovers and a petition calling for the Metropolitan Police to be held accountable for what happened has reached more than a million signatures.
Laura Mckay, who is organising the Market Harborough event, told HFM: “This is a peaceful vigil to pay respects, to get petitions signed for change to the way animals are treated and to ask for better training.
“We are also looking for donations towards animal charities, tins of food, blankets, treats etc that can help struggling charities.
“We would ask that any flowers brought are taken out of plastic wrappings.”
The controversy was sparked after Met officers were called to reports of a woman being attacked by a dog in Tower Hamlets where homeless owner Louie Turnbull, 46, was arrested.
A spokesperson for the Met said officers spoke to the owner of the dogs but added: “Following this interaction, which failed to bring the dogs satisfactorily under control, police firearms officers destroyed the two dogs at the scene.”
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an independent investigation.
