A popular headteacher who was facing redundancy is to remain in post after re-structuring plans were put on hold.

It follows a major campaign by parents and pupils at Swinford Primary School to keep Edy O’Connor, which has included protest marches.

The decision has been taken by the new Board of Directors in charge of the Diocese Of Leicester Academies Trust whose predecessors resigned en masse last week over the issue.

Those behind the ‘Save Our Head’ campaign say they are delighted at the announcement and will continue to fight to keep Mr O’Connor.

Spokesperson Kat Clarke spoke to Hfm:

swinford 2The plan to have one head teacher for Swinford and South Kilworth Primary Schools – to save cash – will now be subject to a full review.

As a result, the redundancy notice handed to Mr O’Connor last week has been withdrawn.

Stephen Adshead, chair of the new trust board said: “As I am sure people can appreciate, it is right that we conduct our own due diligence on some of the decisions that have been made so that we can fully review the options available to us. As a result, we have made the decision to halt the restructuring process.

“We do so acknowledging the fact that our first review of the finances clearly suggests that changes are going to have to be made, and we are not ruling out any options for the future.”
