Thousands Apply To Vote From Home In Local Elections

Written by on 15th April 2021

Tens of thousands of people across the Hfm region are opting to vote from home in next month’s local elections.

There has been a surge in applications for postal votes ahead of the ballots on May 6th.

Polling station will still open on the day, with Covid-19 safety measures in place, but many people are preferring to do it from the comfort of their homes.

County Council elections are being held in Leicestershire and elections for new Unitary Councils in Northamptonshire.

Police and Crime Commissioner elections will also take place in both counties.

The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm next Tuesday (20th) and you can also apply to have someone vote on your behalf at a polling station, known as a proxy vote.

Graeme Wardle, head of member services at Leicestershire County Council, said: “We want to make sure that everyone who is entitled to vote can do so on May 6, regardless of the pandemic.

“Whether you choose to vote at a polling station or by post or proxy, I’d urge everyone to take the time to have their say.

“By using your vote, you can help shape the future of county council services.”
