Tesco Pledges Improvements to “Tatty” Market Harborough Store

Tesco has pledged to improve the outside of its Express store in Market Harborough town centre after it was labelled “tatty” by MP Neil O’Brien.

He has raised concerns about peeling paint and the deteriorating appearance of the building on The Square, saying the town’s public spaces should be “well cared for and maintained to a high standard”.

Neil said that while it may not be the biggest issue facing the town, maintaining local pride still matters and added:  “Concerns have been raised about the appearance of the building in the town’s main square, where Remembrance Sunday and other events take place.

“I believe we should keep the area looking good by ensuring our public spaces are well cared for and maintained to a high standard.

“This will help to build local pride and improve the overall image of the town for both residents and visitors.”

Harborough District Council, which owns the building through its company Harborough District Commercial Services Ltd, says it is liaising with Tesco about repairs in line with the terms of the lease.

Councillor Phil King, Deputy Leader, responsible for Commercialisation, says the council wants to see the building “brought back up to standard as soon as possible” to help protect the character and appearance of the area.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We continue to actively engage with Harborough District Commercial Services and our maintenance teams to carry out the necessary works at our Market Harborough Express store. We apologise for the inconvenience”
