Safety Fears As Streetlights ‘Dimmed’

Residents in Desborough are expressing safety concerns over the dimming of streetlights.
North Northamptonshire Council is replacing bulbs with LED lanterns to reduce energy costs and cut carbon emissions.
But in some areas it means lighting levels have been reduced and residents say streets have been left dark.
People living in Alder Close say they now struggle to see where they are going on pavements, while drivers have also expressed concern.
The LED roll-out is taking place across the council area and similar complaints have been made after lights were changed elsewhere, including in Rothwell.
Cllr Jim Hakewill represents Rothwell-Mawsley Ward and told HFM there is a lot of concern, which should prompt action by council bosses:

Residents are unhappy about the changes to streetlights
North Northamptonshire Council say the new lights comply with its ‘adopted lighting standards’ and the project will help meet its carbon reduction targets and reduce energy bills, enabling funds to be spent on other priority services.
Cllr Macaulay Nichol, Executive Member for Highways, Travel and Assets, said: “We understand that residents may feel the new LED lighting appears dimmer compared to older lanterns.
“However, the new lights comply with the Council’s adopted lighting standards while also helping to reduce glare and light pollution, ensuring a better balance for the community with some areas appearing dimmer, but the older lanterns likely exceeded the Council’s lighting standards and not consistent with other areas in North Northamptonshire.
“Alder Close is lit to the standard adopted by the Council. We are grateful to residents for sharing their concerns and will continue to monitor the impact of these upgrades to ensure they meet the needs of the community.”
