Road To Close For Six Months For Bridge Replacement Work

Written by on 9th January 2023

A road near Great Glen is to close for over six months so a bridge over the railway can be demolished and replaced.

Station Road will be shut from this Friday, so Network Rail can begin work to prepare for the removal of the structure and then build a higher one.

It will be closed until late July from the junctions of Newton Lane, just off the A6 and Kibworth Road near Wistow.

The work is needed for the electrification of the track, as the current bridge does not allow space for the necessary overhead line equipment to be installed.

Gary Walsh, East Midlands Route Director for Network Rail said: “This important piece of work will help us to eventually electrify the route between Kettering and Wigston to deliver a cleaner, greener railway that’s fit for the future.

“I’d like to thank the community for their patience over the coming months and we’ll continue to work with Leicestershire County Council to reduce the impact of our work.”

The road either side of the bridge will also be reconstructed as part of the work.

During the closure, traffic will be diverted via: Kibworth Road, Wistow; Fleckney Road, Kilby; Fleckney Road, Glen Road, Wistow; Newton Lane, Great Glen and vice versa.
