Three rival plans for local government reorganisation in Leicestershire have been submitted to government.
Leicestershire County Council wants to create one unitary authority for the whole of the county – replacing itself and the district and borough councils.
The district and borough councils’ favoured model is for two unitary councils across Leicestershire and one serving Leicester city, while Leicester City Council’s proposal includes expanding its boundaries into neighbouring areas, including parts of the Harborough District and a single unitary council for the rest of the county.

The initial proposals are in response to the government’s plans to streamline local government aimed at simplifying services, saving money and unlock additional funding.
Under the district and borough councils’ proposal Harborough would be absorbed into a new unitary council for South Leicestershire, together with Blaby, Hinckley & Bosworth and Oadby & Wigston district and borough councils.
The final plans will be submitted in November.
