Rainbow Flags Flying For Pride Month

Over 100 rainbow flags are flying in Market Harborough to promote equality and diversity during Pride month.

The Progress Pride flag is flying across the town centre

The flags have been erected above shops and businesses across the town centre by Harborough District Council, to raise awareness and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

The Progress Pride flag is also flying on top of the Symington Building during June.

Cllr Jo Asher, Portfolio holder for Culture, Leisure, Economy and Tourism, said: “We are proud to support Pride Month by flying Pride Progress flags in Market Harborough town centre and on The Symington Building.

“Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate the contribution of LGBT+ people in all areas of life.

“We want to show that everyone is welcome in our district and flying the Progress flag demonstrates our strong commitment to equality and diversity.”

Pride is celebrated around the world in the month of June, as that was the month when the Stonewall riots took place.

They were important protests that took place in 1969 in the US, that changed gay rights for a lot of people in America and around the world.

Pride is a celebration of people coming together in love and friendship, to show how far LGBTQ+ rights have come, and how in some places there’s still work to be done.
