Premier League Announce Coronavirus Training Restrictions

The Premier League have announced the first wave of measures that will be in place at all 20 member clubs training grounds as part of the Project Restart proposals.

All Premier League managers will meet on Wednesday to discuss the planning of the league’s return and clubs now have an idea of what life will be like when they do eventually return with these measures.

As part of the training restrictions, tackling will be banned, pitches must be disinfected before and after each session and players will only be allowed to begin training in groups of five and no more. Training sessions are to last no longer than 75 minutes and they are hoping to restart from Monday May 18 onwards.

On top of that, clubs will be expected to perform private testing for every player and member of staff at least twice a week, as well as completing a daily pre-training questionnaire and temperature check.

All Coronavirus check results will need to be maintained by each club and the Premier League also said: “although Covid-19 will lead to minor illness in the majority, there are additional aspects of this infection that must be considered prior to players resuming high-intensity or high-volume exercise”.

Other control measures include “meticulous personal hygiene and use of PPE [personal protective equipment], no congregation in communal areas, including but not limited to medical rooms and gym areas”.

Many players have already expressed their concern over returning to training so soon, including Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell and Newcastle United’s Danny Rose.

Rose said on his Instagram: “Football shouldn’t even be spoken about until the numbers have dropped massively. People’s lives are at risk.”

The Premier League will need government approval before the next stage of training will be permitted, which will see contact between players permitted once again and training groups expanded to bigger numbers.

The Bundesliga is set to return this weekend with a full round of fixtures in what is the first major European football league to return to action since being called off as a result of the pandemic.
