Plea To Android Phone Users As Police Inundated With Silent 999 Calls

Police are urging owners of Android mobile phones to check the settings after a massive increase in accidental 999 calls.
A software update on some devices means an emergency call can now be triggered by pressing a button the side five times.

Unbeknown to owners, silent 999 calls have been made while phones are in pockets, with Leicestershire Police reporting hundreds of such calls a day.
Northamptonshire Police say its control room is receiving a similar number and both forces are asking people who realise they have accidentally called not to hang up, but to stay on the line and let the call handler know they are safe.
