Planning Inspector Approves Crematorium Plan

Plans for a crematorium serving Hindu and Sikh communities near Scraptoft have been approved following a successful planning appeal.

A planning inspector overruled Harborough District Council, which had refused permission last year for the scheme at Scraptoft Lodge Farm in Keyham Lane East, citing concerns that the development would be too large and out of keeping with the countryside setting.

Developer CDS Group appealed, and a public inquiry was held earlier this month.

The inspector concluded that the crematorium would sit comfortably in its rural surroundings and would not harm the character or appearance of the area, adding concerns about traffic, biodiversity, and heritage had been addressed through planning conditions.

They also acknowledged the need for a facility of this type, with supporters noting it would provide an inclusive service for local Hindu and Sikh families.

The development, which involves demolishing a late 19th century farmhouse and outbuildings, will include two chapels, a dining hall, landscaped gardens, and parking areas, with up to six services a day.

The plans received 56 letters of support and 30 objections.

Cllr Simon Galton, Harborough District Council’s Cabinet lead for Planning, said: “It is very disappointing that the Planning Inspector disagreed with both the council and local groups and residents that the development will cause landscape harm because of its scale; height of chimneys and choice of materials.

“We will work closely with the developer to ensure any development proceeds in accordance with conditions set out by the Planning Inspector allowing the appeal.”
