Planning Application Submitted For 4,000 Homes Near Great Glen

Controversial plans for four thousand homes between Great Glen and Oadby have moved a step closer, following the submission of a planning application.

The scheme, which has been likened to a new town, would cover more than 900 acres, with more than 3,000 homes in the Harborough district and the remainder in neighbouring Oadby and Wigston.

Developers say the scheme would create a sustainable new community and help meet local housing needs, but opponents say the plans would damage the surrounding countryside and create major traffic problems.

A new main road through the development would link Gartree Road with the A6.

However, a transport assessment prepared for the developers acknowledges that the scheme would generate significant amounts of traffic.

Cllr Peter Scott (Glen Ward) has raised a number of concerns about the proposals and told HFM the plans are opposed by many local people:

Campaigners have erected banners protesting at the plan

The proposals also include three new schools, a health centre and more than 12 acres of land for employment uses.

The developers estimate the scheme would create between 1,100 and 1,500 long-term jobs, as well as around 260 construction jobs. The development is expected to take 17 years to complete.

Both Harborough District Council and Oadby and Wigston Borough Council are expected to consider the proposals within the next few months.
