Plan For New Accommodation For People Made Homeless Set To Move Ahead

A plan to create new accommodation in Market Harborough for people made homeless is set to move forward later.
The District Council’s Cabinet is being urged to push ahead with the £956,000 project, which would see a new purpose-built building go up on Roman Way, close to the Church Square junction, pending approval of a planning application.
The authority has already bought an empty building, located behind its Symington Building HQ, which would be demolished to make way for the facility.
It would contain eight en-suite rooms and a shared kitchen, to serve as a place for people to stay temporarily until they are able to find permanent accommodation.
There has been a significant increase in people declaring themselves homeless across Harborough, a situation mirrored nationwide – in 2020/2021 392 households have needed temporary accommodation in the District, compared to 170 in 2018/2019.
The Council says the new facility would mean less reliance on expensive private temporary accommodation, so significantly reducing its costs.

The Council have bought this property on Roman Way, which would be demolished to make way for the new facility.
