Police Commissioner Launches “Flagship” Initiative

Leicestershire and Rutland’s Police and Crime Commissioner has unveiled a new flagship initiative which he claims will put “communities” at the helm of his plans for a safer and more prosperous future.

Rupert Matthews, who controversially defected from the Conservative Party to Reform UK earlier this month, is pressing ahead with his manifesto pledge to adopt a “holistic” approach to community safety, with a stronger emphasis on prevention and partnerships.

As part of the new programme, the PCC promises to empower local communities, such as those in the Harborough District, to implement activities themselves which will have a direct impact in their areas and benefit local people.

Alongside ensuring crime prevention advice is readily available to the public, Mr Matthews is launching what he calls “a practical toolkit”, highlighting simple, cost-effective crime prevention activities that communities can implement themselves alongside ready-made strategies for developing solutions.

The PCC adds that parish councils, Neighbourhood Watch groups and other community groups run by volunteers are “the backbone of society.”
