New Bid To Boost Suicide Prevention In Market Harborough

Efforts are underway to improve suicide prevention in the Market Harborough area.

Campaigners have met with Harborough District Council to discuss ways of increasing awareness and strengthening support networks.

The council is now asking other local support groups to come forward with details of the services they offer, ahead of a further meeting planned for the coming months.

There are ongoing concerns about suicide rates in the area, with three deaths on the railway near Market Harborough this year.

Marie Connor from the HAB Anti-bullying and Mental Health charity was at the initial meeting and spoke to HFM:

Wendy and Mark Nimmo, also from Market Harborough, are at the forefront of efforts to raise awareness and provide support after their son Alex lost his life to suicide in 2022, at the age of 27.

Speaking after the meeting, Wendy said: “Together with Marie, we have been exploring ways to expand support services for young people in the area.

“Our main aim is to help prevent mental health crisis and tackle the sadly high suicide rate in our community.”
