MP’s Concerns for ‘Thriving’ Agricultural Sector

Written by on 3rd March 2025

Harborough’s MP is backing local farmers who’re protesting about the Government’s plans to impose a 20% inheritance tax on agricultural assets next year.

From April 6th 2026 the current 100% relief from tax will become restricted to the first £1 million of combined agricultural and business property – although exemptions could still bring the total untaxed amount for a farming couple up to three million pounds.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has defended Labour’s decision, saying the majority of farms would not be affected – also that it’ll be half the usual inheritance tax rate of 40%.

However, the Conservative MP for Harborough, Neil O’Brien told HFM these plans are already having a wider impact on the ‘thriving’ agricultural sector…

The MP thinks it might not end there…
