MP Raises Mounting Concern Over City Expansion

Mounting concern about a potential expansion of Leicester’s boundaries has been raised by Harborough’s MP in the House of Commons.

Over 7,000 people have signed a petition opposing the move put forward by Leicester City Council, which is part of one of three proposals for local government re-organisation for the city and county.

The government instigated the plans for the changes.

Conservative Neil O’Brien wants residents to be given a say on the matter through a referendum and questioned Deputy Prime Minister Angela Raynor, who stood in for Sir Keir Starmer, at yesterday’s Prime Minster’s Questions.

Mr O’Brien has branded the reply to his question as ‘arrogant’ and spoke to HFM after PMQ’s:

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government previously said: “Our council reorganisation plans will strengthen local democracy and empower local leaders to meet the needs of their communities.

“This will boost local accountability and save taxpayers’ money which can be reinvested into vital public services, as part of the biggest ever transfer of power away from Westminster.”
