MoJ Urged To Rule Out Appeal Against New Prison Refusal

There are calls for the Ministry Of Justice to rule out appealing against the decision to refuse permission for a new prison near Market Harborough.

Officials are still considering ‘next steps’ after the District Council’s planning committee unanimously rejected the building of it on land near Gartree prison, because of the impact it would have had on the countryside.

The government department could lodge an appeal, meaning an independent inspector would review last week’s decision.

Leader of the opposition, Councillor Phil Knowles has written to the MoJ:

A Spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice said: “Our aim is to support the local area and economy by creating hundreds of new jobs and keeping streets safe.

“We note the decision and will consider our next steps.”
