Market Harborough’s Historic Ambulance Station Granted ‘Listed’ Status

Market Harborough’s historic ambulance station has been given protected status to ensure it can be seen by future generations.

The Abbey Street building, constructed in 1924 as headquarters for the St John Ambulance, is now grade-2 listed.

Historic England say nearly a century on, it retains its original folding garage doors, which is very rare, and praised its ‘Queen Anne Revival style’, high-quality brickwork and glazed tiles.

Designed by architect Herbert George Coales, together with his partner Henry Winter Johnson, he later went on to design Market Harborough’s original fire station and associated firefighters’ houses, which are also Grade II listed.

It’s one of 300 sites to be given National Heritage status.

A 1930’s Police box that used to be in North Kilworth has also been protected – the tardis-style kiosk is now at Leicestershire’s Bradgate Park in Newtown Linford.
