Market Harborough’s Crochet Christmas Tree Is Unveiled!

Written by on 30th November 2021

A unique Christmas tree has appeared in Market Harborough town centre – made up of over 1,400 crochet squares.

Hundreds of people have contributed to the project, after members of the town’s WI came up with the idea earlier this year, inspired by similar examples abroad.

The ‘granny squares’ have been stitched together to make a giant cone and placed over a six metre high frame, to create the tree outside the St Dionysius Church.

The project is helping raise awareness of Market Harborough-based charity Home Start South Leicestershire and once Christmas is over, the squares will be made into blankets for families in need.

Clare Farquhar, who has helped organise it, told Hfm it has been a massive community effort:

Stella Renwick, from Home-Start said, “This is a wonderful way to draw attention to the work of Home-Start South Leicestershire.

“We have been helping struggling families with young children across Harborough District for over 37 years, and it has possibly never been harder than at the moment, both because of increased requests for help and increasing competition for limited funding pots to keep the charity services running.

“We hope that local people will support this appeal when they see the fantastic tree, and donate to the appeal fundraising page on www.localgiving.org/fundraising/theharboroughcrochetchristmastree or through our website www.home-startsouthleics.org.uk
