Market Harborough’s £9m ‘Levelling-Up’ Bid Rejected By Government

The government has rejected a bid for £9m of ‘Levelling Up’ funding to transform Market Harborough town centre.
It was submitted by Harborough District Council to fund a number of improvements, including creating a ‘cultural quarter’ between Adam and Eve Street and Church Square and a new two-screen cinema.
Another part of the bid was to pay for improvements at Harborough Market, to create additional space for food and drink facilities and the potential of late-night opening.
The council was notified today that its application had been unsuccessful, as more than 100 other projects across the country were awarded a share of £2.1 billion from Round 2 of the Government’s flagship fund.
Cllr Phil King, Leader of the Council, gave his reaction to HFM:

A government spokesperson said: “The Levelling Up Fund is investing in infrastructure that improves everyday life across the UK, spreading opportunity to historically overlooked areas.
“All projects were subject to a rigorous assessment process under robust, fair and transparent rules, with no involvement of local MPs in the selection process.”
