Lorry Carrying Coal Sets Alight On A47

Fire crews have been dealing with a blaze involving a lorry carrying coal on the A47 near Tugby.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service received numerous calls about the fire on Uppingham Road, just after 11am.

A spokesperson told Hfm: “One appliance was mobilised from Oakham station and another from Eastern station. On arrival, it was an articulated 3-axle lorry trailer.

“Crews used breathing apparatus and two hose reels to put out the fire. Damage was 50% to the rear of the lorry trailer and all tyres were burnt out.”

Firefighters were on the scene for nearly two hours and confirmed the cause of the blaze was ‘accidental.’

The road was closed in both directions as a result of the incident, so highway officials could inspect the road surface, which was left damaged.

The lorry was recovered just before 3pm.
