The Coronavirus infection rate across Harborough has jumped to one of the highest in England, after a Covid outbreak at a school.

The district is now ranked 13th in a list of 315 areas, after 45 new cases were recorded in a week, which has seen the infection rate in the District rise to 48 per 100,000.

There were 16 cases recorded in the previous seven days.

Public health officials have not named the school affected, but say the majority of the new cases are in the 10 to 19 age group.

Mike Sandys, director of public health for Leicestershire County Council, said: “Harborough, like other areas across the county, has been performing brilliantly over the past few weeks, but we’ve seen a significant spike which has pushed the district into the top 20 nationally.

“It seems to be the 10-19-year-old age group that’s been most affected and we do know there’s a specific link to a school outbreak.

“It’s still a case of all age groups being very careful, whether it’s young people or adults. If we continue to follow the basic rules then I’m sure we’ll be able to step up the pace of re-opening.”

The infection rate in the Harborough District is now the highest in Leicestershire.
