Leicester City Player’s 1969 FA Cup Final Tracksuit Top Sells At Market Harborough Auction

A tracksuit top worn by a Leicester City player at the 1969 FA Cup final has sold at auction in Market Harborough for £600 – double the amount it was set to fetch.

The white cotton Umbro tracksuit was worn by midfielder Bobby Roberts, before the Foxes lost 1-0 to Manchester City.

It was consigned by the player himself and bought by a Warwickshire-based bidder after fierce bidding at Gildings Auctioneers.

The final was Leicester’s fourth defeat at the last hurdle of the competition, until they finally won the tournament last year.

Andrew Smith, memorabilia specialist at Gildings, said: “The fierce bidding this rare tracksuit top attracted shows the high value collectors place on memorabilia from Leicester City’s long and chequered history,

“Indeed, with the 2023 FA Cup campaign just around the corner, the story behind this particular piece of Leicester City history serves as a timely reminder that they have long been an unpredictable club who have arguably delivered higher highs and lower lows for their fans over the years than any other football team.”

Roberts made 230 appearances for the Foxes, scoring 25 goals between 1963 and 1970.

He also played for Motherwell, Mansfield Town and Coventry City, before pursuing a career in coaching and scouting at several clubs.

The auction was filmed for an episode of TV’s Antiques Road Trip, due to be broadcast next spring.
