Kitten Thought To Have Started Fire By Switching On Cooker

A young cat is thought to have turned on a cooker which started a fire at a house in Desborough.
The owner was out when the blaze started and returned to find the kitchen badly damaged and three of the electric hobs switched on.
Following an investigation, firefighters believe the kitten, aged about four months old, which was in the kitchen of the house on Braybrooke Road at the time, turned the knobs on the cooker.
A spokesman for Desborough Fire Station told HFM they did not need much force, so the cat could have moved them quite easily, and the cooker had not been used since the night before.

The cat was not injured and the blaze, which destroyed items on top of the cooker and caused other damage, did not spread to other parts of the house, as internal doors were shut.
The spokesman added: “The fire was starved of oxygen effectively extinguishing itself due to doors and windows being closed around the house.
“This is a perfect example of why you should close your doors when in bed at night and also when you leave the house.
“If the doors were left open around the property the outcome would have been very different.”
Fire crews from Desborough and Rothwell were sent to the incident just before 3.30pm yesterday.
