Inquest Rules Former Chief Constable Took His Own Life

An inquest has heard Leicestershire’s former Chief Constable took his own life 12 days after retiring.
Simon Cole, 55, was found dead at his home in Kibworth Harcourt on March 30th.
The hearing in Leicester heard Mr Cole was suffering with anxiety and sleepless nights, due to worry about his future.
He had spoken to his doctor and a mental health nurse about his struggles, but even on the day before his death had assured medical staff he was not considering self-harm or suicide.
Mr Cole’s family chose not to attend the inquest, but the Coroner, Professor Catherine Mason, recorded her ‘sincere condolences’ to them and described Mr Cole’s death as a ‘huge loss’.
A verdict of death by suicide was recorded.
The death of Mr Cole, who had held the position of Chief Constable for 12 years, sparked hundreds of tributes and a service to celebrate his life took place in June.
