Hospital Launches Pioneering Prostate Cancer Treatment

A pioneering new treatment for prostate cancer is being launched after a Market Harborough man benefitted from it.
The patient received Focal Therapy treatment in London and wanted others to be able to benefit from it closer to home.
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, approached the Northamptonshire Health Charity which has since raised more than £400,000 to fund the installation of a High-Intensity Focussed Ultrasound machine at Northampton General Hospital.

Doctors say it will provide treatment with less side effects than surgery or radiotherapy, with the machine sending a beam of ultrasound energy into the prostate from a probe inserted into the rectum.
The sound waves are focused precisely onto the cancerous area, and the tissue is heated to a temperature that destroys the cancer cells.
Men from across the East Midlands will eventually be able to use the service at the hospital.
