‘Massive’ A6 Pothole Damages Multiple Cars

Around 20 drivers suffered burst tyres and other damage after hitting a ‘massive’ pothole on the A6 bypass near Desborough last night.

Many were forced to pull over and wait for breakdown services, while also alerting police to the hazard on the northbound carriageway near the Braybrooke Road roundabout.

The pothole, described as being 6ft wide and 5ins deep, was not visible to drivers as it was full of water during heavy rain.

One driver affected said: “It was a massive hole and there was nothing you could do to avoid it.

“My tyre burst straight away and there must have been at least 20 other drivers parked up on the verge who had also hit it.”

Highway teams later cordoned off the affected section of road, and temporary traffic lights have been installed while repairs are carried out.

A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police said: “We were called at about 7.15pm to reports of at least 10 drivers having hit a large pothole on the A6 and suffering damage to their vehicles as a result. Thankfully no one was injured.”

North Northamptonshire Council is responsible for the road and a spokesperson said: “On Thursday 15 January, the council received a report of a pothole and a team was deployed the same day to make the site safe by installing temporary traffic management.

“On the morning of Friday 16 January, a permanent repair to two potholes was undertaken and the road has been restored to normal operation.”
