It has been revealed that one of the pilots involved in a mid-air collision between two single seater gliders over Leicestershire  yesterday (Thursday 17th August 2023) was killed during the incident.

They were taking part in the British Gliding Association Regional competition, being held at Husbands Bosworth Airfield, but the incident  happened in the skies above Melton Mowbray at just before 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses say one glider was badly damaged during the collision and fell to ground in a field close to the Roundhouse Park housing estate.

Police, along with crews from East Midlands Ambulance Service and  Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service attended the crash site.

Officers have now revealed the pilot of the first glider was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second glider managed to land safely close by, with the pilot said to be “badly shaken” but having only sustained minor injuries.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has been notified and is leading a probe into the crash.

Leicestershire Police are urging anyone with information or footage of  the incident to contact them on 101, quoting incident 422 of August 17.
