HDC Begins Investigating Town Council Option

Harborough District Council has started the process of exploring whether Market Harborough should have its own town council.

The move follows a petition signed by more than 1,800 residents and was formally agreed by councillors at a meeting last night.

Supporters say a town council would give Market Harborough stronger local representation, particularly with local government re-organisation on the horizon.

As part of the Community Governance Review, residents will be invited to share their opinions, and a referendum will also be held.

Although the creation of a new town council was supported by the district council’s cabinet in July, a decision was taken not to explore it at a full council meeting in October.

The town’s four Neighbourhood Forums launched the petition, securing the support of 7.5% of residents – a threshold that legally requires HDC to investigate the issue.
