Green Bin Subscription Charge To Increase

Residents across Harborough are going to have to pay more to have garden waste collected from their homes.

The annual subscription charge for the optional green bin service is increasing by £6 from April to £61.

Harborough District Council says it has no choice but the put the price up, due to higher inflation rates having an impact on the cost of running the service.

It says it is keen to ensure that the full costs of the non-statutory garden waste service continue to be met by those receiving the optional service, rather than using council tax payments from all residents to subsidise it.

Cllr Jonathan Bateman, Cabinet lead on Environment and Waste, said: “A couple of years ago we decided that the optional garden waste service should be fully funded by subscribers as it is unfair for residents who choose not to use the service to subsidise it via council tax payments. With the level of inflation and associated costs being as they are, we have no choice but to increase the cost of an annual subscription in 2023.”

Current customers of the green waste service will receive an email from the Council about the change to the subscription fee and terms and conditions of the service this week.

People who have previously signed up for a recurring payment subscription and no longer wish to use the garden waste service should visit www.harborough.gov.uk/gardenwaste for information about cancelling their payment for next year.

Charges for garden waste collections will be introduced across North Northamptonshire for the first time in April 2023 – residents who wish to use the service will have to pay an annual subscription charge of £40.
