Go-Ahead To Restore Lutterworth Pub To Former Glory After Fire

Work has begun today to restore a fire-damaged pub in Lutterworth to its former glory.

Harborough District Council this week approved plans to rebuild The Shambles, after the 16th-century building was badly damaged when a blaze tore through the thatched roof in February.

The pub on Bell Street has been covered over ever since the blaze, caused by a chimney fire, to protect it from the elements.

Owner Marston’s say work began on-site this morning and it is hoped it will be completed by the end of March next year.

A specialist team employed by the brewery said it had adopted a ‘conservation-based philosophy’ to the re-building plan, which sought to retain as many of the original parts of the building as possible, using ‘traditional materials and methods’ to respect its ‘historic character’.

It also aims to ensure the building is returned to its pre-fire appearance and make ‘no detrimental impact on the character and appearance of the conservation area’ in which it sits.

Small changes, such as new lighting and signs on the outside of the pub are also included in the plan.

An appeal to support managers George and Denise East, who lived on site, raised more than £4,000 following the blaze.
