Go-Ahead For New Sainsbury’s Store In Desborough

The go-ahead has been given for a new Sainsbury’s store in Desborough which will create 40 jobs.

The supermarket giant has been granted planning permission to build it off Harborough Road, close to the BP petrol station on the northern edge of the town.

Construction work is due to begin this summer, with the store set to open in spring next year.

Residents have been calling for another major food retailer for many years and Sainsbury’s received ‘overwhelming support’ from people who responded to a public consultation last year, when the idea of the new supermarket was first announced.

Cllr David Howes, North Northamptonshire Council member for the Desborough Ward, said: “I’ve worked extremely hard with Sainsbury’s to ensure that the planning application was perfect for the local community.

“It’s been great to see all the positive feedback and the enthusiasm for the store. This is a huge investment from Sainsbury’s, and I am excited for work to begin.”

How the new store would look

The new store will have a 126-space car park and an Argos click-and-collect service and Sainsbury’s say it will also make a positive difference in the community, through initiatives like its Food Donation Programme.

Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s Property Director, said: “We were eager to progress with this application after the incredible response we received from local residents during consultation.

“We’ve worked very closely with the council to ensure this will be the best possible store for the community and I’m thrilled we can now start to bring our vision for Sainsbury’s in Desborough to life.”
