Go-Ahead For Naseby Square Re-Development

The go-ahead’s been given for the controversial redevelopment of an elderly people’s housing complex in Market Harborough.

Councillors approved the plan for 38 new affordable homes at Naseby Square at a meeting last night.

It will mean 13 bungalows will be demolished at the site off Stuart Road on the Southern Estate, the occupants of which have already been re-housed.

A late condition added to the planning permission means those affected will be given first refusal on new bungalows to be built, should they wish to move back to Naseby Square.

The green light was given despite major opposition to the plan, including concerns about breaking up the existing community there, and petitions opposed to the plan were signed by over 800 people.

Harborough District Council say the development, which will be carried out by Platform Housing Group, will bring much-needed affordable homes, for rent and shared ownership.

Council-owned land at the site is being sold to the housing association, which owns the rest of site.

The Council said it is refocusing its priorities in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Platform Housing say it will continue to ensure that all remaining residents of Naseby Square are kept fully informed with the redevelopment as it progresses.
