Go-Ahead For Dangerous Concrete To Be Removed From School

The go-ahead has been given for major work to remove dangerous concrete from a Market Harborough primary school.
Harborough District Council has granted planning permission for the roof to be replaced above the hall and kitchen at St Joseph’s Catholic Academy on Coventry Road, at a cost of around £500,000.
Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) was identified above those areas in September, when concerns were raised nationally about the material being liable to collapse.

Both the hall and kitchen have been out of use since then, with pupils eating lunch in classrooms and some activities held off-site.
The Department for Education is funding the full cost of the new roof, with the work to be overseen by Market Harborough-based architects YMD Boon.
The school was the only one in Leicestershire where RAAC was found to be a risk and it is hoped the work will be completed in time for the start of the new school year in September.
Scaffolding has recently been up at the school so seperate repairs could be made to the bell tower.
