Fury Over Leicester Boundary Referendum Rejection

Harborough’s MP Neil O’Brien has slammed the government’s decision not to hold a referendum on a possible expansion of Leicester’s boundaries.

Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby wants the city to grow into surrounding towns and villages, including parts of the Harborough district, as part of a government-led shake-up of councils.

There is major opposition to any expansion, with fears of higher council tax and more house-building.

Over 12,000 people have signed a petition opposing it, after a campaign was launched by Leicestershire and Rutland’s Conservative MPs.

Leicestershire County Council passed a motion last week saying people should be given a say on the matter and Mr O’Brien also called for residents to have a vote on the controversial plan:

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government says although further public consultation will take place, a referendum won’t be part of it.

A spokesperson added: “Parliament has set out the process for establishing unitary councils in two-tier areas, and a referendum is not part of the statutory process that has already begun.

“The process requires statutory consultation, and we will welcome responses from anyone interested in the proposals for unitary local government, including local residents, town and parish councils, businesses and the voluntary and community sector.

“As set out in the invitation letter, areas must demonstrate how the local community has been engaged in developing proposals.”

Leicester City Council’s plan for local government re-organisation is one of three set to be submitted to government for consideration.
