Fury At Plan To Close Market Harborough Tip

There has been an angry reaction at plans to close Market Harborough’s tip.
Leicestershire County Council is proposing to shut the Recycling and Household Waste Site on Riverside as part of cost-cutting.
Residents from the town would have to use Kibworth tip if the closure went ahead and concerns have been raised about highway safety and a potential increase in flytipping.
These people who spoke to HFM in Market Harborough today are not happy with the plan:

The county council is set to launch a public consultation on the closure plan next month and if it went ahead the tip would close in October next year.
Cllr Phil Knowles, Leader of Harborough District Council, has a number of concerns:

The Market Harborough tip is one of three recycling and household waste site across Leicestershire earmarked for closure, as part of proposals to save over half a million pounds, which also include reducing opening hours of all sites during summer months.
Cllr Phil King, who represents the Kibworths on Harborough District Council, is concerned about highway safety if more people have to use the recycling and household waste site on the A6 Harborough Road:

Councillor Blake Pain, cabinet member for the environment and green agenda, said: “We’re doing the best we can with the money we have and we’re super-efficient, but there’s growing pressure and we need to make savings where we can.
“Our recycling and household waste sites are located and open to best serve residents. Proposing to close these sites isn’t easy, but I want to be clear that no decisions have yet been made. We really want people to tell us what they think of these plans.
“We’re focusing on sites that are relatively expensive to run and have practical, viable alternative locations for those who use them.”
