Firefighters were called after a suspected engine fault caused a car burst into flames on the A14.

The incident happened on the westbound  carriageway between junction two near Kelmarsh and junction one near Welford during yesterday evening’s rush-hour.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to the fire at 5.21pm.

A spokesperson told HFM: “Crews from Rothwell and Mereway attended the blaze which saw one car fully alight.

“Firefighters used two sets of breathing apparatus, a hose reel jet and thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire.

“Both crews left the scene shortly before 18:30 with the cause of the fire being believed to be accidental due to a fault in the car’s engine.”

No-one was injured in the incident which caused lengthy delays for drivers, as the carriageway had to be closed while firefighters tackled the blaze.
