Fire Safety Upgrades At Gartree Prison To Cost £9m
Written by HFM News on 23rd August 2021
Work to improve fire safety at Gartree Prison will cost around £9m.
The Ministry of Justice will replace six ageing staircases in three wings, upgrade fire alarms, install a smoke extraction system and make ventilation improvements.
A spokesperson told Hfm: “As part of our ongoing work to make prisons safer we are carrying out important upgrades at HMP Gartree.”
A new back-up power supply system, to work in the event of an electricity failure, will also be installed as part of the work.
The MoJ says it hopes to carry out the improvements by next October, pending a planning application being approved by Harborough District Council.
