Family Devastated After Dog Died When Startled By Firework

A family from Fleckney has been left distraught after their pet dog died when it was startled by a loud firework.

Greyhound Faye collided with patio doors at their home, after bolting when the firework exploded close-by while she was in the garden.

The dog, aged 9, had been adopted by the Wilford family in 2017, after being rescued from a dog meat farm in China.

The RSPCA is increasing its pressure on the Government to bring in tighter controls around fireworks, because of the effect they have on animals.

Amy Ockleford from the animal charity spoke to Hfm:

Richard Wilford said: “Faye was fine in the house. We’d been watching TV and I waited for a break in the fireworks to take her out into the garden to go to the toilet before bed.

“All of a sudden there was an almighty explosion, followed by two more as three fireworks were set off nearby.

“Faye panicked and bolted for the house, running straight into the patio doors. The sound of the impact was as loud as the firework. She fell onto the ground and started convulsing. Within two minutes she was dead.

“It was horrendous.”

Last year, Harborough District Council become one of the first authorities in the country to back the RSPCA campaign, urging suppliers to stock quieter fireworks, organisers of all public displays to advertise them well in advance and calling on government to limit the maximum noise level of fireworks.
