Events To Mark VE Day Anniversary

A flag-raising ceremony and Act of Remembrance will take place in Market Harborough to mark the 80th anniversary of the VE Day.
The flag will be raised on top of the Symington Building during a short ceremony on Church Square at 10am on Thursday (May 8th).
A commemorative service of thanksgiving will be held at St Dionysius Church at 7.30pm, followed by the Act of Remembrance and wreath-laying ceremony beside the War Memorial on The Square at 8.30pm.
People are being asked to turnout to support the events and Stewart Harrison, chairman of Market Harborough Royal British Legion, spoke to HFM:

The war memorial will be lit purple during the ceremony – the colour of the combined forces – and event lights around the Square and Symington Building will be lit in the union flag colours white, red and blue all next week for the anniversary.
Events are also place in other parts of the district on Thursday, including in Kibworth and in Lutterworth, where there will be a beacon lighting event at Coventry Road Recreation Ground.
John Richardson, Chief Executive of Harborough District Council, said: “VE Day is a national time of celebration, reflection and remembrance, as we mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the six years of terrible conflict and the loss of so many service personnel and civilians.
“At Harborough District Council, we are rightly proud of our Armed Forces Covenant Silver Award and the work we do through our Armed Forces Officer and our Elected Member Armed Forces Champion to support service personnel, and they will remain at the forefront of our minds as we take part in the VE Day commemorations.
“I hope many of our residents will be able to attend the events in our district to mark this important day in our nation’s history.”
