E-Scooters Banned From Market Harborough Railway Station & On Trains

E-scooters have been banned from Market Harborough railway station on on-board trains.
East Midlands Railway has taken the decision over concerns about the danger posed by batteries used to power the machines, saying a malfunction on a train or at a station could cause a fire.
The ban also applies to hoverboards and e-skateboards, although electric wheelchairs, mobility scooters and e-bikes are exempt.
EMR says recent incidents associated with faulty, or unregulated, lithium-ion batteries, have highlighted the risk the batteries pose when they overheat.

An EMR spokesperson said: “These devices, which are often not approved for use in the UK, pose a potential risk as they contain lithium-ion batteries that are sometimes known to overheat.
“Once the batteries get too hot there is no way of stopping the temperature building or extinguishing the fire until the reaction has finished. In these instances, a large amount of potentially toxic smoke is emitted, and jets of flame are often produced.
“The result of such a malfunction onboard a train or at a station could cause a fire or serious harm to customers and staff.
“We understand that these devices are popular, but the safety of our customers and staff is our number one priority.”
