Drivers’ Frustration At ‘No Show’ Roadworks

Severn Trent Water is being criticised for not carrying out any work for most of yesterday while restrictions were in place on Springfield Street in Market Harborough.

The work at the entrance to Sainsbury’s car park has led to lengthy tailbacks, with drivers unable to turn left into the car park or right out of it, meaning all traffic had to use the roundabout by Kettering Road to enter and exit.

Work was carried out on Monday evening, but ‘vehicle issues’ meant no workers were on-site for most of yesterday.

Speaking yesterday, driver Reg Hollingsworth told HFM: “It is crazy that there is not a single person working when so much disruption is being caused.

“Why could they not have removed the closure during the day if they knew no-one was going to be there.”

Severn Trent Water say the works were completed last night and the traffic management is being scheduled to be cleared and the road reinstated, but has no timescale for that.

The spokesperson added: “We understand that roadworks are an inconvenience and we want to thank everyone for their patience while they are ongoing in Springfield Street.

“For the safety of our team and the public, a lane closure is required and we will work as quickly as possible to get our essential works completed and the road reopened.”

A spokesperson for Leicestershire County Council told HFM: “The works are being carried out on private land, so Severn Trent does not need a permit, or to notify us of the works.

“Severn Trent is carrying out a meter chamber rebuild which started at 11:20pm on Monday.

“It appears there were vehicle issues and the works were unable to be completed, so returned on Tuesday night to finish up.”
