Two Drivers Die After Crash

Two lorry drivers have died after a crash on the A14 between Kelmarsh and Welford.

It happened at 6.20am today, when for unknown reasons, a white Volvo lorry travelling on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 1 and 2, crossed through the central reservation, onto the westbound carriageway, where it collided with a black Leyland lorry

The driver of the Leyland died at the scene of the collision and the driver of the Volvo later in hospital.

Collision investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has information about it, to call the Drivewatch Hotline on 0800 174615.

Officers would particularly like to trace the driver of a dark or black saloon car, possibly a BMW, which was travelling eastbound towards Kettering, as they may have witnessed the collision and have information useful to the investigation.

Both carriageways of the A14 remain closed between junctions 1 and 2, and are expected to remain shut until mid-afternoon at the earliest.

A number of drivers were stuck in queues directly behind the collision for several hours but have now been able to continue their journeys.

Diversion routes including the A508 and A4304 and roads in Market Harborough are very busy.

A section of central reservation has been removed to allow trapped traffic to be released
