A driver has suffered life-threatening injuries following a serious collision on the eastbound A14 this morning.

The man, in his 30s, was driving a white flatbed Iveco Daily van when it was involved in a crash with a blue Volvo lorry, between junction 1 at Welford and junction 2 for Kelmarsh at around 5.30am.

He became trapped and was freed by firefighters before being taken to University Hospital Coventry with what police describe as serious, life-threatening injuries.

The incident happened about ten minutes after a separate collision involving two lorries around half a mile further along the road, which had caused traffic to queue.

No-one was seriously injured in that crash.

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with dash-cam footage of either collision to make contact with officers.

Anyone with information is asked to email CollisionAppeals@northants.police.uk, call the Drivewatch Hotline on 0800 174615, or contact Northamptonshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 26000050954.

The collisions resulted in the eastbound carriageway being closed for over eight hours and the westbound carriageway was also closed for a time, leading to severe congestion.
