Covid-19 Outbreak At Gartree Prison

An outbreak of Coronavirus at Gartree Prison is the major factor behind an increase in the Harborough District’s infection rate.
The area was named yesterday as one of just 12 parts of England to see a weekly rise in cases.
It is understood around 20 people have tested positive at the jail near Market Harborough, although it is not known if they are all prisoners or a mixture of inmates and staff.
Mike Sandys, Director of Public Health for Leicestershire, spoke to Hfm:
A Prison Service spokesperson said: “Our priority is to limit the spread of the virus and protect the lives of those who live and work in our prisons.”
“We have taken precautionary measures at Gartree, in line with public health guidance, and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”
Figures released by Public Health England yesterday showed the infection rate in the Harborough District was 179.1 per 100,000 people (168 cases) in the seven says to February the 11th – up from 173.8 the previous week (163 cases) and above the national average of 148.
