Council Branded “Fun Police” In Row Over Removal Of Dens

A row has broken out over the removal of dens built on public land in Market Harborough.
Harborough District Council has hit back at criticism — with some accusing it of being the “fun police” — saying the structures in a wooden area off Simborough Way are unsafe and unstable.
It warns someone could be injured if they remain and says action is being taken to remove them.

The decision has sparked strong reaction online, with some residents defending the dens as a safe space created by young people.
One said it was “a space local teenagers had independently created and used as a safe place to gather”, while another argued the structures were built “out of necessity” and said removing them would be “vandalism”.
Others questioned the council’s approach, suggesting more dedicated spaces should be provided for young people.
Cllr David Page, Cabinet Lead for Neighbourhood Services, said the structures were identified during routine works and are “unsafe, unstable and built from inappropriate materials”, with exposed nails, excavations and debris.
He warned: “Someone will get hurt if this continues.”
Cllr Page added the council is not being a “kill-joy”, but has a duty to act, saying if someone is injured the council could be liable and costs would fall on taxpayers.
He also confirmed police have been notified over concerns of criminal damage, and said removal work is now under way to secure the area.
