Council Acts To Protect Trees Near HMP Gartree

Council bosses have acted to protect around 30 trees on a green space near Gartree Prison, amid fears the area may be redeveloped.
A temporary Tree Preservation Order has been placed on the land by Harborough District Council, with a view to making it permanent.
Residents on Stuart Crescent raised concerns earlier this month that a car park could be built on the area, which fronts Gallow Field Road.
The Ministry of Justice said it was ‘reviewing options’ for the site and since then plans for a new prison and expansion of the existing jail have been announced.
The land that could be redeveloped
A Council spokesman told Hfm: “A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) was placed on a group of trees within open space at Stuart Crescent, Gartree on 22nd June.
“There are several different trees species across the open space, many of which are outstanding, good, or fair/average specimens, and would warrant inclusion within a TPO.
“There is now opportunity for interested persons to comment on the TPO until 24th July, after which period the Council will decide if the order should be confirmed.”
